The summer of 2009 proved to be not only fun but also very busy. From Bocce Ball to Outdoor Puppet Shows, the Schreiber Public Library had activities for everyone. July began with a bang. Peter Mennie’s show called Get a Clue: the CSI Magic Show was a hit for kids of all ages.

Heritage Days
This year our Bocce Ball tournament had a record-setting 55 teams. Much fun was had by all. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Can’t wait to see you all next year!
Visitors were able to sample cookies from around the world during Heritage Days at the library. Cathy Carlino also had her annual Taste of Italy cooking demonstration. This year she showed us how to make Italian doughnuts from scratch.

Congrats to our Summer 2009 Computers for Seniors Grads . Instructor Sam Lengyel gave local seniors basic computer training. Our summer students Cassandra Costa and Hailey Mikkola were busy with various projects and programs this summer. They held an Agent 009 Summer Reading Camp for kids from grade 1 to 5. Drop Zone had activities for older kids from grades 6 to 8.

Our Katimivik volunteers were also a great help with our summer activities. They co-hosted an evening of storytelling about Schreiber’s people, places and event called Garden Secrets at the Little Sprouts Community Garden. There was also a puppet show called “The Smartie Garden”.
Speaking of the Little Sprouts Community Garden….we had another successful growing season. Thanks to all the gardeners, summer students and Katimivik volunteers who helped the garden to continue to be a friendly green space to visit.

Cemetery Tour Brochure Project

The Schreiber Public Library has taken on a new and exciting Cemetery Tour project.  Our summer student John Ziolkowski worked all summer compiling information and interview local residents regarding  the Schreiber  Municipal Cemetery

The end result of this project will be a Walking Tour of the cemetery along with stories about some of the cemetery residents.

Dave Nicholson Speaks at the Schreiber Historical and Archival Society’s Annual Meeting
Dave Nicholson from Riverside Cemetery’s Historical Walking Tours gave a presentation on how to organize and set up a cemetery walking tour.  He discussed how he was able to set up the walking tour in Thunder Bay.
Dave also shared some interesting stories about some of the people interned at the Riverview Cemetery.  He then proceeded to guide the group on a tour of Schreiber’s cemetery.  It was a great presentation and the group learned a lot .
